Festivals in India

Independence Day is a national holiday in India commemorating the nation’s independence from the British Empire on August 15, 1947. India attained independence following a period of freedom struggle noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience. On each subsequent Independence Day, the Prime Minister of India unfurls the National Flag and gives a speech at Red Fort, New Delhi. The holiday is observed throughout India with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events.
